Dr. Mani Golparvar is Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology Entrepreneurship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is also Faculty Entrepreneurial Fellow, CEE Excellence Faculty Scholar and the director of the Real-time and Automated Monitoring and Control (RAAMAC) lab at UIUC. He received his PhD degree in Civil Engineering and MS degree in Computer Science from UIUC in 2010, MASc in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 2006, and MS and BS in Civil Engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology in 2005 and 2002 respectively. Prior to joining the faculty at UIUC, he was an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech. Dr. Golparvar is the recipient of the 2018 ASCE Walter L. Huber Research Prize for Innovation in Civil Engineering, 2017 Hojjat Adeli Award for Innovation in Computing from Wiley-Blackwell publications, Top 20 Under 40 in Construction from ENR in 2017, 2016 ASCE Dan H. Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction, 2013 ASCE James R. Croes Medal for innovation in Civil Engrg, 2013 FIATECH CETI award for outstanding researcher, 2012 best paper award from the ASCE Journal of Construction Engrg and Management, and numerous conference paper awards from ASCE. As the first and former Chief Innovation Advisor at FEMA, she led the first innovation team down to Hurricane Sandy to provide real-time problem solving in disaster response and recovery. She has deployed teams into several disasters including, the Boston Marathon Bombings assisting at the scene with social media analysis and Moore, Oklahoma tornadoes for continued mobile registration and coding solutions. She has also deployed teams into the Oso, Washington Mudslides to fly drones and 3D print topography maps for Incident Command. In the Nepal earthquakes her team collaborated with Nepali women leaders in relief efforts, including the rebuilding of schools and empowerment trainings. In 2015, she led the team to the Middle East to support the Syrian Refugee Crisis launching an artificial intelligent robot for psychosocial services and built a survivor-to-survivor guide for the McMurray Wildfires in Alberta, Canada. In 2016, her team provided public health gaming to the Miami-Dade Public School System to educate on the outbreak of the Zika virus. She deployed innovators to Rockport, Texas during Hurricane Harvey in 2017 to design a system for efficient donations management serving over a thousand survivors daily along with kick starting a mobile medical unit and a smart sheltering system. The team responded to the wildfires in Paradise, California problem-solving challenges with responders and survivors for safe and resourced re-entry into the town. In 2019, the team focused on solving challenges for the multi-state flooding after receiving a request from the state of Nebraska’s university system. This past fall, the team solved for future earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, and wind storms with Canadian communities in Vancouver, Ottawa, Edmonton, and Cambridge. Desi and the team continue to work with communities’ worldwide.

Aside from her work with URBAN, Alexandra acts as a Built Environment Expert for the Design Council UK, and sits on the Highways England Design Panel. She lectures at architectural schools, conferences and is a reviewer at universities including Harvard and The Bartlett, UCL.
